An Englishman s home is his castle but an Irishman s home is ... Blarney Castle, Bunratty Castle and Dublin Castle are three of the most recognisable and well-known castles in Ireland but how many of us really know why and how they were built and who lived in them? There are many castles dotted throughout Ireland and each one has its own story to tell, its own history to reveal. The conquest of Ireland by the Anglo-Normans brought dramatic changes to the Irish landscape. Prior to 1169 castles were not a common architectural feature. The Irish relied on their natural surroundings bogs and woods for protection from marauding forces unlike the conquering Normans who developed strongholds as a means of defence. Annals from that time indicate that the country was full of foreigners and castles . Initial fortifications were made of earth and timber and later of stone. However, not all castles were built for military purposes. Many were constructed for long-term occupation. David Sweetman looks at the six main fortification types built in Ireland from 1169 onwards: Timber and earthwork castles, large stone fortresses, hall-houses, later medieval fortresses, tower and fortified houses, and stronghouses. The Medieval Castles of Ireland is liberally illustrated throughout with photographs, plans and reconstruction drawings.
Biographie de l'auteur :
David sweetman, MA, FSA, MRIA is chief archaeologist in Dúchas (formerly the Office of Public Works). He is general editor of the County Archaeological Inventory Series and has been widely published with many ground-breaking archaeological excavation reports to his credit. He is a member of many academic bodies and learned societies both in Ireland and abroad.

While an Englishman's home is his castle, in Ireland virtually all castles were built for defensive purposes. The arrival of the Anglo-Normans in Ireland is traditionally dated as 1169. Their impact on Irish history was profound and not just political and military. They also contributed to many other spheres of activity, not least architecture. This book deals with the development of the Irish castle from 1169 to the seventeenth century. Approaching the topic in a logical and systematic way, a chapter is allocated to each type of castle in chronological order. Beginning with the large earthwork and stone castles, newly introduced by the Anglo- Normans, the author describes and discusses the later medieval hall houses and tower houses. These were followed by strong houses and fortified houses at the end of the late medieval period. Today Blarney Castle (County Cork) and Bunratty Castle (County Limerick) are probably the best-known surviving examples of medieval castle building.
