Recycling is a cornerstone of sustainable living. Yet when it comes to buildings, we usually demolish and start again from scratch. The construction industry is getting better at recovering materials from demolition, but re-using existing structures is less expensive and less wasteful.
Wood is the ideal material for reuse. It's naturally good looking, durable, simple to assemble and take down, and easy to move. For sustainability, wood is second to none, and recycling a wood structure prolongs its carbon storage, making an even stronger environmental impact. Recycling also fulfills a need. Portable and adaptable structures are the ideal solution to temporary requirements, such as a new classroom to house a sudden influx of children, a ticket both for a seasonal attraction, or a major event, such as the London Olympics, which will take place for one brief summer in 2012. Redundant facilities in one area may be in accute demand elsewhere.
