Revue de presse :
SUPERB PHOTO RECORD of fishing ... This stunning collection of images from trips on board Scottish, Faroese, Icelandic and Greenland trawlers, gillnetters and longliners aims to 'shed some ... light onto the value of fishing and the work that fishermen do,' says photographer Maria Olsen. She manages to tell the story of each trip from cod longlining to demersal twin rig trawling through high quality colour shots of fishermen at work ... What makes the book so ceaselessly fascinating is that, to get the magnificent range of images and insights into different facets of life on a fishing boat, Maria Olsen has clearly got some dirt under her nails and got close to her subject matter. (...) The framing of the images also throws the viewer right on deck. (...) When taking shots of the crews at work Maria Olsen really throws the camera around, playing with unconventional angles and framing that gives a palpable sense of the chaos and drama of living and working on a fishing boat. --Fishing News International

IMAGES OF FISHERMEN: The North Atlantic features scores of full color pictures taken on board fishing boats in Faroe, Iceland, Greenland, and Shetland, each a different kind of boat. As a glimpse into the life on board the fishing boats, this book really is unique and photographer Maria Olsen has done the skippers and crews proud. A gorgeous book to dip into and browse through -- it's a book where the pictures really do tell the story. --BBC Radio Scotland

Photojournalist gets up close and personal in the North Atlantic fisheries ... I'm not a huge fan of coffee-table books. () For this book, I may make a rare exception. Images of Fishermen is a blend of modern-day North Atlantic ride-along, history lesson and industry update. Photographer Maria Olsen does not simply offer a catalog of fishing beauty shots. Sure, there are a few, but the meat is in the stills of the crew on deck attaching the trawl sonar, processing cod, mending nets. Olsen immersed herself in her subject, and she got close enough to reveal its reality as well its beauty. --National Fisherman

Biographie de l'auteur :
With an emphasis on photography that communicates compellingly, Maria Olsen is known for creating stunning pictures. She has worked for more than a decade as a professional photographer, taking assignments from news media and demanding clients on both sides of the Atlantic. Maria Olsen has a style of her own. Nonetheless, much of her work is based on the photojournalistic tradition she became familiar with -- notably the principle of the "decisive moment" -- during her training in New York City, at the International Center of Photography. A combination of professionalism developed over the years and her own particular focus on expressions of character makes Maria Olsen s pictures stand out. The commitment so strongly conveyed in her photography has earlier been brought to life in work with humanitarian subjects, some of which has been exhibited in New York and her home country Sweden. IMAGES OF FISHERMEN: The North Atlantic is Maria Olsen's first book, and most probably not her last. At the convergence of feeling and realism, this powerful series of photographs depicts fishermen in the North Atlantic and their working environments. Menakhem Ben-Yami, Dr hc is an internationally renowned, independent adviser in fisheries development and management. He started his career as a fisherman, became a master mariner, and subsequently a technical and management adviser, serving as Chief of the Israeli Fisheries Technology Unit and as Fishery Industry Officer for FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). An author of numerous papers and articles on various subjects of fishing technology and ecology, Ben-Yami has conducted extensive fishing surveys in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, and carried out numerous missions to 'third world' countries in connection with development of small-scale fisheries, credit schemes, and allocation of fishery resources between small and larger scale fishery sectors. Ben-Yami is a regular columnist for World Fishing.
