She is found shambling along Park Lane with a self-loathing Groucho Marx, on Hitler's balcony and in Prince Philip's hotel room, and manages to land herself in deep professional water with The Beatles and Harold Pinter, not to mention Mussolini. Olga herself is revealed to be something of a paradox: a strong, determined, professional woman battling in a male-dominated world, but submissive, sensitive and endlessly searching for the governance of a strong man. This she eventually finds in the arms of a married man and an affair that will span decades following a string of steamy romances.

Olga Franklin (1911-85) was a journalist for the Daily Sketch and Daily Mail, where she made a name for herself as a fearless reporter, travelling the world to chase stories as wide and varied as her outrageous love life. She was staunchly committed to her unconventional life in London during the Second World War and spent time living in a corridor when her room was bombed. In later life she pursued a freelance broadcasting career, making regular appearances on TV and radio. After leaving university, Olga's nephew, Richard Jaffa, worked as a journalist for two provincial newspapers and then for the Daily Mail. He got the newspaper bug from his aunt and still has proud memories of the day they both had a byline on the same features page. However, after a few years, the novelty wore off and he qualified as a solicitor. He is now settled in Birmingham with his wife, Jane, and as well as editing Olga's letters, he has published a book on the subject of Rudyard Kipling's connection to Freemasonry - Man and Mason: Rudyard Kipling.
