From mid-century Europe to contemporary Belarus: Tania Skarynkina's A Large Czeslaw Milosz With a Dash of Elvis Presley is a collection of essays, often including poems, about life in the small town of Smarhon. Written in an appealing conversational style, the pieces are structured around coincidence and playful connections: So there we have it. That's a perfect way to finish the essay, I didn't even have to contrieve something. With gypsies and salami it began, with gypsies and salami it ended, with an hypnotist in between. This easy style belies the disorienting, fascinatingly foreign content and context-gypsies, salami and hypnotists are the least of it. The text is thick with references to Russian and Eastern European literature and gloriously alien nuggets keep cropping up, such as, on the two-day train journey to Artek (a camp for Soviet youths), each child is handed four one-litre jars of cold chicken for breakfast and supper. In A Window on Another Life, Miss Skarynkina listens to the lectures of Merab Mamardashvili on Proust. The Georgian philosopher notes the difference between what we call another life, but in reality is no more than a continuation of what we can imagine and an entirely unknown situation. The intoxication of these three collections rests in the situation portrayed being not only "entirely unknown rather, they exist at the very edge of what we can imagine. --Country Life 16/06/2018

Biographie de l'auteur :

Tania Skarynkina, poet and essayist, was born in 1969 in Smarhon, Belarus. This book of literary essays was published in 2015 and includes recollections of her childhood in Smarhon interwoven with thoughts on poets, philosophers and world literature as a whole. Jim Dingley, who has a lifetime's experience of translating Belarusian into English, is currently working on this project with Scotland Street Press.
