Lew McLeod has been travelling and working with Painter Hayes since he was a boy. Shearing, charcoal burning - whatever comes. Painter made him his first pair of shoes. AN ASTONISHING EXAMINATION OF MALE FRIENDSHIP, SET IN AUSTRALIA'S WHEATBELT
At only 11 years of age Lew is given an apprenticeship to hard-man shearer Painter Hayes. The beginning of his new life means one less mouth for his abandoned mother to feed, but it also means he will never see her again.
