Of my many failings or vices in life, an instant attraction to technical and 'how to' books ranks right up there alongside coffee as an essential part of life. The whole concept of making things appeals to me, be it a bracket or an engine plate or anyhting, and if there's a publication about it then it's a one for me. This latest books from Wolfgang Publications is all about sheet metal fabrication at the basic end: and from what I've read in it, there will be enough information for any classic enthusiast to begin the none to gentle art of shaping metal into motorcycle parts. As with many modern publications of this type, it's aimed at the custom market; but the dedicated classic restorer or maintainer shouldn't let this put them off, as the basics are the same whatever the end product is to be. Inside the book the reader will be shown how to make patterns from simple materials, the sorts of tools a small workshop should be looking at and what sort of metals can be worked by them. Throughout the book, anyone attempting to work sheet metal is shown safe working methods, and is encouraged to use them, along with safety equipment, so that the whole experience is satisfying rather than painful. In the end though it comes down to this...you may not want to make a double compound curved rear mudguard from scratch, but if the untinkable happens and the one on your bike is damaged, you could well be able to repair it after a read and some practise. --Classic Bike Guide, Sept, 2010
