The sumptuous paintings of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema reveal more about nineteenth-century values than those of any other artist of the era. His elaborate reconstructions of ancient Rome, with languid women posed against white marble in dazzling sunlight, his forays into sentimentality, escapism and hedonism - and the nudity displayed in his depictions of Roman baths and bacchanalian revels - were adored by the Victorian public. He acquired fame, honours and wealth, only to have his pre-eminence undermined by the changing testes of a subsequent generation. In recent time, with the resurgence of enthusiasm for Victorian art, Alma-Tadema's achievements have been re-evaluated and his paintings are once again widely admired and have attained record prices at auction. Alma-Tadema was, paradoxically, a Dutchman who lived in England and painted Romans who were really ‘Victoriens in togas’. He was highly meticulous and doggedly Hard-working, a unique artist and a shrewd businessman who interpreted the eccentric desire of his contemporaries to see their ‘golden age’ compared with that of the Roman Empire and devoted his life to fulfilling this fantasy. In this elegant monograph Alma-Tadema's stylistic changes are investigated, as is his work in what he called ‘the sister arts’ such as his theatrical and costume designs. His important influence in many other media, from architecture to Hollywood epic film sets, is also considered in the fully illustrated biographical introduction.
