One, two or three stars... in the worlds of gastronomy or hospitality, stars are a reference to the ranking system used to guarantee standards of quality, comfort and service. Now there's a great yet simple idea which could help you to choose the next golf course you visit. .. It's called Golf Stars and is a concept thought up by Stéphane Coudoux*! Apart from a few press articles, websites, often-outdated guides and of course word-of-mouth, there has been nothing available to help golfers choose the course that best suits their tastes or own personal selection criteria, whether it's price, maintenance levels, the general appeal of the place, or how busy it gets... Until now, that is. Stéphane Coudoux has teamed up with 19 golf professionals, including presidents and directors of golf clubs, journalists and greenkeepers to establish a set of comprehensive and objective criteria for assessing and ranking golf courses. With its own guide and website, Golf Stars has to date ranked a total of 475 golf courses using a rating system of one to five stars. So how are the stars awarded? This is done based on 182 different criteria with 7 categories: · Course: design, maintenance, facilities, service, congestion during busy periods... · Club-house: reception, cloakrooms, pro-shop... · Bar/restaurant area: quality, prices, dishes on offer, opening times... · Practice and tuition: location, number of posts, teachers, courses... · Additional facilities: hotel, pool, tennis courts, spa, kids' club... · Access: signage, transport... · Course and Surroundings: materials used, buildings, fertilisers, eco-responsibility... Each criterion is weighted according to its importance, and the total number of points gained is used to determine the stars for each category and hence the overall ranking. Nine golf courses have so far been awarded the ultimate 5 stars (having gained over 140.20 points)
