Mit dem 1880 veröffentlichten Kurzroman »Lotti, die Uhrmacherin« gelang der österreichischen Autorin Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916) ein Publikumserfolg, nachdem sie zuvor jahrelang erfolglos Bühnenstücke verfasst hatte. Der frühemanzipatorische Roman, in dessen Zentrum eine berufstätige Frau steht, damals in bürgerlichen und Adelskreisen absolut ungewöhnlich, ist autobiografisch eingefärbt: Ebner-Eschenbach absolvierte 1879 selbst eine Uhrmacherlehre und sammelte später Uhren; ihre Sammlung sog. Formuhren befindet sich heute im Wiener Uhrenmuseum.
