Homepage Brill: This is one of those attempts at presenting the revival of Greek and Roman archi- tecture and decoration in modern times, in continuation of the Reception of classi- cal heritage in general, and of architecture in particular, which has become popular in recent years. The book, however, arouses even greater interest since it deals with such a revival in the Levant, in fact the geographical area where Greek architecture and art were born and developed further under the Roman empire. Its title Rückkehr des Klassischen is well chosen, namely a 'return of the classical' to its origins. The Austrian scholar Anton Bammer is the person equipped to deal with such a complex issue: an architect and Bauforscher by education, with more than 40 years of archi- tectural and archaeological experience in Turkey, mainly at Ephesus, and with long- lasting activity in Greece. Moreover, he possesses a deep and direct knowledge of ethnic groups and their cultures in the modern Levant. All of this provides him with a firm foundation for a cultural approach to this subject. B. emphasises in the book's subtitle his intention to focus on the issue of minorities and their relationship with the revived classical architecture in the area The book is divided into two main parts, although not clearly marked as such by B. himself. The first presents the main general and theoretical terms and aspects of the problem, namely imitation of antiquity, classicism, historicism, etc. The second part is dedicated to rural architecture vs town architecture, including observations on style and dating, minorities and functionality. A catalogue of the monuments mentioned n the book adds the data needed for their better understanding. However, the chap- ter 'Zur Geographie und Geschichte der Levante' (pp. 98141) is wrongly placed between chapters dealing with architecture; it were better placed at the beginning of the book introducing the reader to the geography and history of the area. Furthermore, a glossary should have been provided to explain the diverse terminology of this com- plex area and its complex issues. The book concludes with a bibliography and a very useful index. Well-chosen photos and relevant plans and drawings of details provide a visual compass for the reader In the first part of this book B. offers a comprehensive summary of the main aspects of imitation of antiquity in modern times in general, as a prologue to the sit- uation in the Levant. Classicism and anti-classicism, Athenian (neo)classicism and his- toricism are described and evaluated against their European background. One of the main conclusions drawn is that classicism, which was born in the East, was in fact revived by Europe, whereas only later was it (re)exported to the East. Thus, Italian Renaissance architecture was the first 'classical' art form reintroduced to the eastern Mediterranean by Venetians and Genoese. Vitruvian villas of Venetian style became part of the 'villegiatura' of Crete, Corfu and other areas. All these attempts were part of a definitely aristocratic architecture, mostly identified with the ruling strata of soci- ety. At this point B. emphasises the fact that throughout the Ottoman empire such architecture was mainly associated with minorities such as Greeks, Jews and Armenians, and only partly adopted by the Ottoman ruling class.
