Los colores vivos, las formas orgánicas y el rechazo de las líneas rectas son algunas de las características más representativas de la singular obra de Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000). Adalid del inconformismo, este artista, arquitecto y activista dejó un rastro de imaginación e ideas innovadoras que se materializó en edificios, pinturas, manifiestos y acciones, entre otras actividades.
Uno de sus trabajos más conocidos es la Hundertwasserhaus de Viena, síntesis estructural de la vitalidad y singularidad que marcó toda la obra del artista. Hundertwasser creía que los edificios racionales, estériles y monótonos traían miseria a las personas. Llamó a boicotear el paradigma modernista defendido entre otros por Adolf Loos, y abogó por una arquitectura basada en la libertad creativa y el compromiso ecológico. Hundertwasser se oponía ferozmente a las líneas rectas, que calificaba de “impías e inmorales”, y estaba fascinado por la espiral y las formas secesionistas de Klimt y Schiele.

Pierre Restany (1930-2003) pasó su juventud en Marruecos, antes de realizar sus estudios en Francia, Italia e Irlanda. Desde 1963 colaboró con la revista de arquitectura domus y desde 1985 dirigió la revista D’ARS. En 1955 conoció a Yves Klein, lo que le condujo a la teoría del « nuevo realismo », que expondrá en 1960, año de la creación del grupo de artistas del mismo nombre. Es autor de numerosas publicaciones sobre el arte del siglo XX.
