Henry Dunant reiste im Juni 1859 geschäftlich nach Solferino. Er traf unmittelbar nach einer Schlacht zwischen österreichischen und napoleonischen Truppen in der italienischen Stadt ein. Das Schlachtfeld nahe der Stadt bot einen erschreckenden Anblick: es war übersät mit Tausenden sterbenden und verwundeten Soldaten. Dunant mobilisierte Teile der einheimischen Bevölkerung und richtete ein behelfsmäßiges Krankenhaus ein, in dem alle Soldaten unabhängig von ihrer nationalen Herkunft gemäß dem Motto „Alle sind Brüder“ behandelt wurden. Die Idee, eine internationale, neutrale Einrichtung zur medizinischen Versorgung Verwundeter zu schaffen, formulierte Dunant erstmalig im vorliegenden Band. Er nahm wesentlichen Einfluss auf die Bestimmungen der ersten Genfer Konvention, deren Formulierung er mit Veröffentlichung seiner Erinnerungen initiierte, und legte gleichzeitig den Grundstein für die Errichtung der Internationalen Rotkreuz- und Rothalbmond-Bewegung. Für seine Verdienste erhielt Henry Dunant 1901 den erstmals verliehenen Friedensnobelpreis. Nachdruck der deutschsprachigen Erstausgabe aus dem Jahr 1863.
