Que Dieu ait un nom personnel, qu'il a révélé à Moïse dans le livre de l'Exode (3:14), est une connaissance commune parmi les érudits bibliques et les théologiens. Que ce nom personnel révélé par Dieu n'est pas Jéhovah, est également connu parmi les érudits bibliques et les théologiens. Cependant, ces faits ne sont pas vraiment connus parmi la plupart des lecteurs laïcs de la Bible, en particulier en langue anglaise. Tout comme c'était (et l'est toujours) parmi les Juifs, la plupart des chrétiens et des lecteurs laïcs de la Bible ne connaissent pas le nom réel révélé par Dieu Lui-même à Moïse au buisson ardent. Ce petit livret essaie de traiter la métamorphose de ce nom divin, retraçant les circonstances historiques de la façon dont le nom Jéhovah est né et pourquoi il ne devrait pas être utilisé comme remplacement ou synonyme du Tétragramme, YHWH (transcrit comme Yahweh), le nom de Dieu révélé bibliquement.
