It is a detailed, by friendly account of the life of the Tibetans as seen in their own homes. Divided into 27 chapters, each chapter describes a myriad of observances that the author made while he was stationed there. The chapters deal with the geography, history, the shepards and herdsmen, the merchandise, beggars, robbers, women and their position and recreation, marriage customs, children, food, drinking and smoking, ceremonies and etiquette, amusements, festivities at the new year and the last rites. The book is illustrated with a number of photographs by the author.
