Joseph Joffo nació en París en 1931, donde su padre trabajaba como peluquero. De él aprendió la profesión, al igual que sus hermanos. Los únicos estudios que realizó en su vida fueron los de la escuela primaria. En 1971 tuvo un accidente de esquí que lo dejó inmovilizado. Para divertirse, empezó a escribir sus recuerdos de infancia, y dos años después, Un saco de canicas estaba terminado. El libro se transformó en un best seller y fue traducido a 18 idiomas, además de ser adaptado al cine. Ha escrito también cuentos para niños y otras novelas.
