' The journeys of Monsignor Salvatore Garofalo are narrated in this volume in Italian only through extraordinary photographs that he personally took during the 1950s and 1960s, which became part of a Photographic Fund donated to the Vatican Museums. From Jerusalem to Galilee, crossing several bordering countries such as Greece, Turkey and Syria, this "journey's notebook" can be read as a diary of images, full of history and spirituality. The stages of his journeys are traced in short essays, introducing the visited towns, narrating their history, particularly underlying the religious and archaeological vicissitudes, and closing with some biblical verses. Each place is illustrated by black and white images, masterfully representing landscapes, people, churches and streets of that time, as well as archaeological ruins and episodes of everyday life. Shots, details, lights and shadows follow one another in suggestive photographs that let the reader approach the represented subject, nearly breathing the atmosphere of that time and those places, now deeply transformed. Accurate captions guide the reader along a fascinating profound historical and scientific study of the illustrated journey. Some of them, mentioning the same biblical verses that Monsignor Garofalo used to note on the back of the photos, exalt the religious value of this memory.
