Carrolls Alice in Wonderland (1865) is met het vervolgdeel Achter de Spiegel (1871) uitgegroeid tot een twee-eenheid. Het dubbelboek is de nonsensklassieker bij uitstek, zowel in de kinderliteratuur als in die der volwassenen. Misschien is het wel het enige kinderboek dat het tot de volwassenencanon heeft geschopt. In het Engels is het boek altijd leverbaar; in vrijwel alle landen bestaat er een niet-aflatende stroom van vertalingen (om nog maar te zwijgen van toneelversies en verfilmingen en steeds weer nieuwe illustratoren). Het is nooit stil geworden rond Alice.
Martin Gardner voorzag Alice van uitgebreide aantekeningen, die inmiddels al bijna even klassiek zijn geworden als het werk zelf. Zijn commentaar, waarin gebruikgemaakt wordt van alle deskundigheid die er inzake Carroll en diens werk bestaat, verrast door zijn aardsheid en liefdevolle aandacht voor details. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898) was docent wiskunde aan Christ Church College, Oxford. Zijn boeken voor kinderen publiceerde hij, met groot en blijvend succes, onder de schuilnaam Lewis Carroll.
Martin Gardner schreef veel boeken over wiskunde als spel en was verzot op puzzels. Tot drie keer toe heeft hij een Annotated Alice gepubliceerd: in 1960, in 1990 (More Annotated Alice) en in 2000 (The Definitive Annotated Alice). Zijn commentaar werd vertaald in het Japans, Hebreeuws, Italiaans, en Duits.
