In de loop van zijn carri re maakte Herman Hertzberger een groot aantal ontwerpen voor theaters, in binnen- en buitenland. In dit boek worden ze voor het eerst op een rij gezet. In een lang interview met Arthur Wortmann licht de architect toe waar het hem bij het ontwerpen van theaters om te doen is. Aan de hand van vele voorbeelden gaat hij in op de wijze waarop een theater zich in de stad dient in te passen, op de overwegingen die spelen bij het ontwerpen van de zalen en op het geheim van een goede foyer. Hertzberger legt uit dat theaters eigenlijk moeten 'verdwijnen' in de stad. Hij houdt een pleidooi voor polyvalentie in plaats van flexibiliteit en benadrukt de noodzaak om ruimte te geleden zodat er voldoende te zien is. Eens temeer toont Hertzberger zich een begenadigd didacticus, die vol overredingskracht zijn visie uiteenzet.

Hertzberger explains that theatres in fact should blend into the city. He calls for polyvalency instead of flexibility and stresses the need to articulate space so that there is always plenty to see.
