Description du livre Hard bound. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : New. First Edition. The mythical and grotesque figure of Chung K'uei [Zhong Kui] holds a special place in the hearts and minds of the Chinese. The myth, dating back to the Tang Dynasty, involves a young scholar and his attempt to succeed in the Imperial examination system. While he was able to pass the examinations, his extremely homely appearance resulted in his being denied an offical appointment -- in anger and frustration he committed suicide on the palace steps. From this beginning, the failed scholar became the king of ghosts in Hell and developed the reputation of being able to control all lesser demons in the Lower Realm. Thus his painted image, as a 'ghost-repeller', came to be displayed prominantly during New Year festivities as well as in households and businesses -- a tradition retained even to the present day. The catalogue includes many fascinating images of the hero, from the late Tang/Five Dynasties, through Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing and into the Republican era. Text in Chinese with English table of contents, abstract and captions. 170 pp., 71 col. plates, many of which are two page spreads. Size: 30 x 22 cm. N° de réf. du vendeur 001654
