This volume presents the history of Spanish genre painting, a domain so far practically unexplored, in the great age, the siglo de oro, of Spanish painting. The introductory chapters discuss in detail the antecedents -Dutch and Italian genre painting- under whose impact Spanish genre painting has developed and give a circumspect analysis of Spanish still-lifes showing traces of genre, dating from the second half of the sixteenth century, as well as of certain other paintings of ecclesiastic character, displaying likewise genre-type details while bearing already the early signs of a realistic rendering. The author endeavours to present the genre painting oeuvre of Velazquez and Murillo, the two foremost Spanish masters, in its entirety: Velazquez's so-called bodegones -showing peasant figures at meals, travellers sitting around a tavern table, street vendors, etc.- and Murillo's canvases rendering Seville street-boys as embellished, sentimental genre-figures, stripped of their earlier, realistic features. With due regard to their significance, the output of these two great masters is dealt with both in the text and in the catalogue covering the data of 264 objects as well as in the 180 plates with illustrations; quite naturally, also the other masters of Spanish genre painting, like, inter alia, Alejandro de Loarte, Antonio Puga or Pedro Nuñez de Villavicencio are discussed here more completely tha ever before.
