Présentation de l'éditeur :
One of the most significant chapters in Jewish history concerns the Marranos in Spain and Portugal. Although they posed as Christians, secretly they observed Judaism and practiced according to the traditions of their forefathers. If their double life standards were discovered, they were condemned to undergo the horrors of the Inquisition. Nevertheless, they demonstrated extraordinary courage in keeping to their faith. In his novel, Rabbi Dr. Meir Marcus Lehmann draws a wide-scope portrait of the Jews of Spain during the Inquisition. This historical novel unfolds drama and adventure, illustrated by the story of one Spanish Jewish family - Family D'aguillar. The novel was adapted to Hebrew by Dr. Tirza Hechter, a descendant of M. Lehmann, who also authored the epilogue. Through the epilogue, the reader is exposed to what "Middlebrow Literature" stands for. Based on German and Jewish literature from the early 19th to the early 20th centuries, the epilogue shows that the impact of Middlebrow Literature was evident in the communal consciousness and identity of both German and Jewish people. The epilogue also discusses the significance of an historical legend and shows that although mainly perceived as an historical legend, Diego D'aguillar served as a role model for Jewish communities in Germany and the Diaspora in the 20th century.
