Subsequent editions appeared in 2009, 2012 and 2015; a French translation was published in 2014. Born in Beira, Moçambique, in 1955, Mia Couto was editor of the review Tempo and of the newspaper Noticias de Maputo. His first novel, Terra somnambula, appeared in 1991; a second, Estórias abensonhadas, followed in 1994 (9th edition, 2009). A Varanda do Frangipani (1996, 8th [i.e., 9th] edition, 2010), has achieved both critical and commercial success. He has published several collections of short stories, at least one of which-Vozes anoitecidas-was translated into English and published by Heinemann; his books have been translated as well into Spanish, French, Italian, German, Swedish, Norwegian, and Dutch. He has also published a book of poetry. The Prémio Vergílio Ferreira was awarded to Mia Couto in 1999 for his work as a whole. Danuta Wojciechowska, born in Quebec, 1960, has lived in Lisbon since 1984. In 2003 she revieved the Prémio Nacional de Ilustração; she was the Portuguese candidate for the Hans Christian Andersen prize in 2004. This book had an initial printing of 15,000 copies.***.
