Edward Elgar's Salut d'amour is one of those pieces by the British composer that has a particularlyhaunting melody. Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts, the work became an enormous success early on. Notes in the surviving autographs for the versions for Violin and Piano, Violoncello and Piano and Piano solo show that Elgar had intended making arrangements for numerous scorings - but only the three named versions were authorised through original manuscripts. Amongst these the piano version has a special significance: Caroline Alice Roberts was a piano pupil of Elgar's and thus the composer might have rewritten the original for violin and piano for his fiancée and later wife. Alongside the first print, we have also evaluated Elgar's autograph engraver's copy for thefirst time.

Edward Elgars Salut d'amour gehört zu jenen Stücken des britischen Meisters, deren Melodien schier unvergesslich sind. Das 1888 für seine zukünftige Frau Caroline Alice Roberts komponierte Werk trat schon früh seinen Siegeszug um die Welt an. Wie Notizen in den erhaltenen Autographen zu den Fassungen für Violine und Klavier (HN 1188), Violoncello und Klavier (HN 1189) und Klavier solo belegen, hatte Elgar selbst Arrangements für zahlreiche Besetzungen vorgesehen - durch eine Originalhandschrift autorisiert sind nur die drei genannten Fassungen. Darunter mag die Klavierfassung eine besondere Bedeutung haben: Caroline Alice Roberts war Klavierschülerin Elgars, und so könnte der Komponist das Original für Violine und Klavier für seine Verlobte und spätere Gattin umgeschrieben haben. Erstmals werten wir neben dem Erstdruck auch die autographe Stichvorlage Elgars aus.
