Titre : AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). 2 pages, ...

Reliure : Soft cover

Description :

A short and fairly routine letter, with mention of the weather, the visits and travels and recent writings of friends, the contents of recent issues of Weird Tales; but also with references to two key Bloch pieces. After commiserating with Bloch on the rejection by Doubleday-Doran of his first novel (a probably reference to THE SCARF, published in 1937, unless it refers to some other unpublished apprentice work), he offers encouragement. "Hope you can collaborate successfully with [Henry] Kuttner on 'The Black Kiss.'" This short story was later renamed "Sea Kissed," and formed the title story to a small unauthorized wartime paperback from England of the same name (London: Utopian Publications, 1945, 39 pages). This represented Bloch's first book, preceding by several months his Arkham House collection, THE OPENER OF THE WAY. The title story of this is also mentioned here in a postscript at the top of the letter. "Have just read 'The Opener of the Way'. Damn good! You generally manage to achieve the mood & atmosphere that the bulk of the pulpists altogether lack." The letter would make a very nice accompaniment to either one of these books. The letter also gives some information about a minor figure, Stuart Boland, who had only recently become acquainted with HPL. See Joshi III-D-59 for information on Boland's reminiscence about Lovecraft. Unpublished? Faint creases where folded for mailing, else fine. (#108092). N° de réf. du libraire 108092
