This is one of a series of 'Almanaks' published by S. B. Benedictson [pen name Sondahl] during the period 1899-1934, designated as years/volumes 1-7) . This volume (for 1903, has "Maple Leaf Almanak" as a cover title, the first in the series to be so designated. Add.Entry Sigfús Benedict Benedictsson 1865-1951. 52 [6] p./s.; 16 cm./sm. Sevearl small chips to wraps not affecting text, else, Very Good condition in stapled wraps (softcover). CONTENTS: An impressive list of Icelandic North American writers contributed to this almanac in both prose and poetry, including the two principal Icelandic Canadian poets, Stephan G. Stephansson (Svarid Mitt) and Guttormur G. Guttormsson (Harpa, 1902), S. J. Johannesson and the publisher Benedictsson himself. The booklet also includes much almanac material concerning calendar matters, and it features many advertisements with a mixture of English and Icelandic text, some being illustrated. A very seldom-seen early Icelandic language annual periodical. The publisher/editor Benedictsson (pen name Sondhal) was the husband of leading sufragette Margrjet Benedictsson. He was a well known Icelandic-Canadian writer (poet) and publisher and pioneer of the sufragette movement, of which his wife, Margrjet was a leader. They lived in Winnipeg and Hecla Island and Selkirk, all in Manitoba, Canada. Sigfus established a printing press in Selkirk in 1898, and later in Winnipeg, and with his wife published the feminist journal Freyja, the only woman suffrage paper in Canada.
