A propos de cet article

PUBLISHER: Winnipeg, S. B. Benedictsson, 1934. Subject:: Literature of Canadian/American Icelanders / Vestur-Íslendingar. Add.Title: Maple Leaf Almanak(?). This is one of a series of Almanaks published by S. B. Benedictson [pen name Sondahl] during the period 1900-1935, designated as years/volumes 1-7) . This volume (for 1935, has "Maple Leaf Almanak" as a cover title. Add.Entry Sigfús Benedict Benedictsson 1865-1951. 68 [4] p./s.; 21 cm./sm. Both covers are loose at spine and both have a chip to lower right corner, not affecting text on front cover, and affecting only a few lettes to an advertisement on (recto of) rear cover, else Very Good in stapled wraps (softcover). CONTENTS: Includes almanac features related to the calendar year plus historical essays, poems both by the publisher (a poetic tribute to Halldor Laxness) and his wife, the now well known suffragette, Margrjet Benedictsson, plus contributions by Kr. Stefansson. There are also translations of English essays/literature into Icelandic, plus a political cartoon in a fold out format near the end of the booklet. This volume of the periodical also includes advertisements with a mixture of English and Icelandic text, some of which is illustrated. A very seldom seen and early Icelandic language annual - published from 1900 to 1905 and again in 1935. The publisher/editor Benedictsson (pen name Sondhal) was the husband of leading suffragette Margrjet Benedictsson. He was a well known Icelandic-Canadian writer (poet) and printer/publisher and pioneer of the suffragette movement, of which his wife, Margrjet was a leader. They lived in Winnipeg and Hecla Island and Selkirk, all in Manitoba, Canada. Sigfus established a printing press in Selkirk in 1898, and later in Winnipeg, and with his wife published the feminist journal Freyja, the only woman suffrage paper in Canada. Referenced in Hjjartar, pp. 41 and 73. A rare item indeed. N° de réf. du libraire 35218
