A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

Major sites important to the study of US history are profiled in this guide to historical geography. The history of the site is discussed, as are the events that occurred at that site and their significance in US history. What to expect when visiting the site today is also described.

From Booklist:

This set profiles 237 sites located within the U.S. that have historical or social significance. Arranged alphabetically by state, the 51 entries (including the District of Columbia) consider towns and communities, monuments to events and people, and birthplaces and homes of notable individuals. Sample entries include the Amana Colonies, Cooperstown, the Grand Ole Opry, Harlem, Kent State University, the King Ranch, and Nook Farm.

Each state entry begins with a general historical overview, usually two to three pages long. These are followed by reports on individual sites, often several pages in length. Basic data is provided at the beginning of each site entry: the date when the area was founded or first came into historical significance; "Relevant Issues" (topics that relate to the site, such as African American history or disasters); "Significance"; and location and contact information. Detailed essays then place each site in historical and social context. An annotated bibliography of adult-level popular and scholarly works concludes each site article. Each state entry also includes a listing of additional sites. These listings provide the name and general location, identify relevant topics, and offer a one-paragraph "Statement of Significance."

Four states, Kentucky, Ohio, South Dakota, and West Virginia, have only one featured site entry. Sixteen other states have two. The largest number of entries are found under New York, with 24, and California, with 26. The seemingly few site entries can cover a lot of ground, however. For example, Michigan is one of the states with only two featured site essays. The first, Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum, chronicles Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company, the impact of mass production and the advent of the automobile on American society, Ford's relationship with Thomas Edison, his appreciation for the work of Noah Webster and the Wright brothers, and Ford's attempts to preserve historic buildings and technologies as documentation of the role played by the U.S. in the Industrial Revolution. The entry for the second featured site, Mackinac Island, summarizes the history of the Great Lakes region, including American Indian influences, European exploration, the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the fur trade and John Jacob Astor, the development of the area as a tourist attraction, and ongoing historic preservation efforts.

Two indexes are provided: a category index, which lists sites based on the 29 topics identified as "relevant issues," and a comprehensive index. Occasional black-and-white photographs complement the text, and state maps indicating general locales are provided.

It should be noted that much of the information found here first appeared in other sources. Some 130 site essays have been reformatted and updated from Fitzroy Dearborn's International Dictionary of Historic Places, Volume 1--Americas (1995). Also, all of the descriptive state essays first appeared in Salem's The Fifty States (2000). To institutions that own these works, the amount of recycled information in America's Historic Sites may be of concern. School libraries might be better served by Macmillan's Monuments and Historic Places of America [RBB My 1 00], which, though not as comprehensive, covers sites that are more closely aligned with standard curriculum and features the user-friendly, graphic-intensive Macmillan Profiles series format. For academic and large public libraries, America's Historic Sites provides a wealth of information gathered together in a single source. RBB
