Catalogue prepared by Marcia Tucker with research assistance and biographies by Kasha Linville. Introduction by Edgar P. Richardson. From the text, 'No one knows what makes a great collector. Outstanding ability is rare in any field and in none, perhaps, more so than in the peculiar blend of sensibility, visual perception and acquisitiveness that we call collecting art. Ferdinand Howald was, in my judgment, a great collector. ~ A thrifty Swiss, he saved money and was able to buy Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad stock at a very low figure during the panic of 1893. This laid the foundation for his later independence.". N° de réf. du libraire 19561
