A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

Architecture in Tennessee provides a critical history of the regional building art that covers a period of almost one hundred and fifty years, beginning with the construction of squared-log and frame houses and ending with the architectural eclecticism that produced a wood and plaster replica of the Parthenon in Nashville as centerpiece of the Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition. These years witnessed construction of eighteenth-century houses in the Cumberland settlements and upper parts of the state, development of the delicate Federal style of the early nineteenth-century, the local Greek Revival, Gothic, and Italianate, the romantic classicism of southern nationalism, and the birth of modern styles. Author James Patrick places Tennessee in the continuum of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American architecture for the first time and explores the regional understanding of style by interpreting architectural tradition as a significant literature. Architects like David Morrison, Adolphus Heiman, and James M. Hughes emerge as important personalities who gave nineteenth-century Tennessee its only important art.
