ANTHROPOLOGY owes much to Prof. Gerland. His new Atlas of Ethnology, while forming part of the great Physical Atlas of Berghaus, may be obtained and used as a separate work by anthropologists, to whom it will be of great service in methodizing the vast and growing information with which they have to deal. This application of graphical method, it is true, has difficulties which even the greatest skill cannot altogether overcome, but Prof. Gerland may well be content with his success in making evident at a glance the characteristics of mankind, seen from many points of view. Their distribution over the earth, as thus made evident, may often lead straight on into theories of origin. The fifteen plates contain nearly fifty maps, each suggesting a principle, or showing where there is room for one (Nature, 47). THE AMERICAN ANTROPOLOGIST. [Vol. VI) on Die Atlas der Völkerkunde: This meritorious work, with its vast assemblage of details, may be called unique in its execution, though not in conception. It is an enlargement of the ethnological or seventh part of Heinrich Berghaus’ (‘ Physikalischem Atlas), and Berghaus’ maps are here so thoroughly recast that even their outlines are scarcely recognizable, for modern research has made too many additions necessary. Preliminary remarks are added in form of a preface, and their perusal is absolutely necessary for the comprehension of the maps. These are subdivided into little squares by lines drawn from east to west and by other lines intersecting them vertically, so that any name mentioned in the index can be found by consulti’ng the squares. One planiglobe serves to represent the color of the skin in the different races, another that of the hair, of which there are two great subdivisions, straight and curly. The density of the population is very graphically represented by the increasing density of the shades. Religion, religious conceptions, endemic distempers, epidemics of the nineteenth century, dress, foods, human occupations and dwellings fill each one planiglobe. Then come the races, nations, and tribes of the five parts of the world, represented on seven full-si (booknr: 38588). N° de réf. du libraire 38588
