Book has 379 pages including index, cobalt blue cloth boards with gilt insignia on the front and gilt title on spine; text has rag edges, contains 7 chapters, 17 addresses and articles, a tissue-covered frontispiece portrait of General Butterfield (an engraving from an 1870 Matthew Brady photograph), 24 additional illustrations. Covers are bright and show only minor wear with rubbed edges and a few rub marks; spine has a waterstain at the bottom; binding is good; endpapers have some smudges and darkened areas but the text is completely unmarked and in excellent condition. This copy collates complete with the frontispiece portrait of Butterfield taken from the Matthew Brady photograph being lightly foxed. A limited edition, this copy is #192 of 400 copies. Bud Robertson, in the section "Military Aspects--Soldier's Life" in the Nevins bibliography, notes that "[t]his voluminous tribute contains a large number of letters written by and to Butterfield" [Nevins I, 66].
