A propos de cet article

Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-7 [8] 9-287 [288: blank], inserted frontispiece with illustration signed "C.A.S.," green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. First edition. Apparently a later printing or issue, this one with frontispiece illustration of a man and two women replacing a photographic portrait of the author, "Philadelphia" dropped from the imprint on the title page, and "ninth edition" stamped in gold the on front cover. "One of the more eccentric of American fantasy novels. The bellicose hero, en route from Sydney to London, is pitched overboard in mid-Pacific by his exasperated shipmates, only to find land a few feet below the surface of the water. This leads him into an underground chamber where a huge diorama displays mysterious scenes from a lost continent, Sageland. On kissing the image of one of the women, the barefoot, seven-foot tall female comes to life. She is the last member of a utopian community that was extinguished 4000 years earlier." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1286. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 132. Reginald 08733. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 L-116. Cloth rubbed at edges, gold on spine panel dull, some loss of gold on front panel, old bookplate of the Truth Research Foundation affixed to front paste-down, a very good copy. The first edition of this book is rare. (#148105). N° de réf. du libraire 148105
