Synopsis : This is the 13th and final volume of the trade edition of the Boswell Papers, begun in 1950 with "Boswell's London Journal". It covers the last six years of Boswell's life in which he finished his "Life of Johnson" but was haunted by doubts and fear of death.

From Library Journal: The appearance of this 13th volume of Boswell's journals marks the end of the project, begun in 1950, to publish his diaries. Each book has had its delights--Boswell's first meeting with Johnson in the London Journal ( LJ 11/1/50), their subsequent exchanges, Boswell's celebrity-hunting in Europe. Yet in one major way this last book is the best, for it records the completion of the work that earned Boswell the title "great biographer," hisincomparable Life of Samuel Johnson (1791). One sees him collecting material, writing, revising, worrying about the work's success, and rejoicing in its favorable reception. As in the other journals, he also appears as a great autobiographer, hero as well as hero-worshiper, whose keen observations of self and contemporaries instruct and delight.
