The inteiror of the book is clean and unmarked, showing shallow dents to the corners of many pages. The paper covers have wear at tips and corners, and two nicks of missing paper -- one on the top left hand corner, near the spine, and the second on the top left corner of the back. Edges of wrappers slightly rubbed. Top corner of front wrapper has two light creases. Tiny 3mm closed tear to fore-edge of front wrapper. Tiny closed tear and associated tiny nick and tiny crease to bottom edge of rear wrapper. Tiny nick to top edge of rear wrapper. Spine tight. Very slight light unobtrusive sporadic foxing to front and rear wrappers. Very light crease to top corners of pages. Interior pages clean. No inscriptions. Colour illustrations clean and bright. Black and white illustrations clean and bright. No fading. Front and rear wrappers bright. ***32 pages including recto of rear wrapper and rear wrapper. Pages are numbered from page 3, with pages 1 & 2 being front wrapper and recto of front wrapper (as called for). 174mm x 126mm. ***First impression of the true first edition of The Battle of Britain: a Puffin Picture Book No. 21. The illustrator, James Gardner was drafted into the Camouflage Training School at Farnham during World War Two where he designed a series of inflatable deception projects which included dummy tanks and landing craft. He was also employed by The Ministry of Information as an illustrator and illustrated three non-fiction children's books for Puffin Picture Books, including this title. ***A wartime first edition, extremely hard to find with its original thin and fragile colour wrappers and interior pages in complete and very nice bright collectable condition.
