A propos de cet article

[6], 313 pages, cloth, DJ, very good. 1st edition. Illustrated by Nancy Silver. Edited and with an introduction by his son James T. Goo. From the DJ: Before The Gods transports a boy of Chinese heritage from his western home and lifestyle in Hawaii into the depths of home life in China, at a time when custom and tradition were as they had been for centuries, and all the rites and legends and beliefs of the old days were still being taken with the utmost seriousness by everyone. It examines the Chinese attitude early in this century, when a sleeping land was hardly aware of the world outside. The year was 1916, when Thomas Goo and his younger brother Paul, both in their teens, boarded a ship which took them to what was to them a strangely foreign land, where they could hardly speak a word of the native language nor knew anything of its people and customs. A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

Taken from the dust jacket: "BEFORE THE GODS transports a boy of Chinese heritage from his western home and lifestyle in Hawaii into the depths of home life in China, at a time when custom centuries, and all the rites and legends and beliefs of the old days were still being taken with the utmost seriousness by everyone. Slowly but surely, they acquired a working knowledge of the language, and an understanding of the world which went with it. Goo's memories of his early days in China give an inside view through the mind and eyes of an impishly curious and thoroughly westernized outsider, who became integrated into the heart of a vast and ancient culture, with its venerable traditions, its many glittering festivities and ceremonies its legends and rites, and came to accept the joys and sorrows of its day-to-day concerns as his own. Thomas Goo remained in his new homeland, where he eventually married and raised a family, and even became peripherally involved in the dangerous game of Chinese politics. Looking back nearing the end of a long life, certain images had a way of returning to his mind - images of the simpler, homier times which he knew and loved - and always so vividly in spite of some fifty intervening years, often persistently, even hauntingly.". . . BEFORE THE GODS is. . . intensely personal, born of pain and maturity and hope."
