Language: English . Brand New Book. Bodmin Moor is an upland landscape, heavily protected, farmed extensively and with an increasingly light touch, and enjoyed by many as a retreat from busier modern worlds. But it is also a place of industry and the home of busy agricultural communities. Well-preserved remains of streamworking, mining, quarrying, clay working, turf cutting and more intensive farming were subjected to archaeological survey and historical research as part of the wider-ranging survey partly covered in the first volume (on prehistoric and medieval landscapes). Supplementing the survey text are aerial photographs and detailed line drawings, mainly plans and elevations, but also reconstructions of sites and schematic representations of processes as well as large-scale maps of key areas. Synopsis : This study of the industrial life of Bodmin Moor complements that of the prehistoric and medieval landscape of the Moor published in 1994 as volume 1 of the survey. Surviving archaeological and historical evidence of past mineral exploitation and industrial activity can today be found all over the Moor, Cornwall's largest area of granite upland. Survey by the Cornwall Archaeological Unit and by the former Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England found evidence for working methods from the earliest, simple and small-scale, to the sophisticated and industrial mining and quarrying of the nineteenth century when extraction of copper, tin, granite and china clay reached its most intensive phase. Amid growing industrialisation, changes in agriculture developed. The working population expanded, served not only by developing public services, but also by many chapels and public houses. Like its predecessor, this volume includes copious photographs and line illustrations, and is accompanied by large-scale, four-colour detailed maps of the Moor.
