Description :

Language: N/A. Brand New Book. Each of these slipcased limited editions is signed and numbered, and has a ribbon marker and specially illustrated endpapers. With a print run of just 500, this is a treat for collectors. One drowsy summer s day in 1984, teenage runaway Holly Sykes encounters a strange woman who offers a small kindness in exchange for asylum . Decades will pass before Holly understands exactly what sort of asylum the woman was seeking .The Bone Clocks follows the twists and turns of Holly s life from a scarred adolescence in Gravesend to old age on Ireland s Atlantic coast as Europe s oil supply dries up - a life not so far out of the ordinary, yet punctuated by flashes of precognition, visits from people who emerge from thin air and brief lapses in the laws of reality. For Holly Sykes - daughter, sister, mother, guardian - is also an unwitting player in a murderous feud played out in the shadows and margins of our world, and may prove to be its decisive weapon. Metaphysical thriller, meditation on mortality and chronicle of our self-devouring times, this kaleidoscopic novel crackles with the invention and wit that have made David Mitchell one of the most celebrated writers of his generation. Here is fiction at its most spellbinding and memorable best. N° de réf. du libraire

Synopsis : FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. Interweaves six narratives spanning the period between 1984 and the 2030s to chronicle a secret war between a cult of soul-decanters and a small group of vigilantes who would take them down. By the award-winning author of Cloud Atlas.

Review:

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, September 2014: Fans of David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas, Black Swan Green, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet) have been salivating over the release of The Bone Clocks —and they have every reason to. This is a feast of a book—perhaps the author’s best to date—a saga that spans decades, characters, genres, and events from Mitchell's other novels. The structure is most similar to Cloud Atlas, with The Bone Clocks pivoting around a central character: Holly Sykes. Each chapter/novella is narrated from the perspective of an intersecting character, with settings ranging from England in the 80s to the apocalyptic future. Each story could stand alone as a work of genius, as they slowly build on Holly’s unwitting role in a war between two groups with psychic powers, culminating in a thrilling showdown reminiscent of the best of Stephen King. Taken together this is a hugely entertaining page-turner, an operatic fantasy, and an often heartbreaking meditation on mortality. It’s not to be missed. – Matt Kaye

Description du livre London, England: Sceptre/Hodder & Stoughton, 2014. Hardcover. État : As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 640 pages. Published in 2014. The author's saga-novel. Now considered a contemporary classic. Deluxe Slipcased Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Foyle's Limited Edition, the Powell's "Indiespensable" Edition, and both the British and American regular trade editions. The Deluxe Slipcased Edition sold out shortly after publication. It is now scarce. As to be expected of British book-making, it is an exquisite production: "Each of these Slipcased Limited Editions is signed and numbered, has a ribbon marker, sprayed page edges, and specially-illustrated endpapers. Sealed in cellophane. All books are swathed in biodegradeable bubblewrap and posted in strong, custom-made book boxes to ensure undamaged delivery" (Publisher's blurb). Presents, in its most collectible edition format, David Mitchell's "The Bone Clocks". A triumphant achievement. "A feast of a book, perhaps the author's best to date, a saga that spans decades, characters, genres, and events from Mitchell's other novels. The structure is most similar to 'Cloud Atlas', with 'The Bone Clocks' pivoting around a central character in Holly Sykes. Each chapter is narrated from the perspective of an intersecting character, with settings ranging from England in the 1980's to the Apocalyptic Future. Each story could stand alone as a work of genius as they slowly build on Holly's unwitting role in a war between two groups with psychic powers, culminating in a thrilling showdown. A hugely entertaining page-turner, an operatic fantasy, and an often heartbreaking meditation on mortality. It's not to be missed" (Matt Kaye). Fans were openly hoping (and feverishly campaigning on social media) that it would finally catapult David Mitchell to Booker-Prize heaven. As has often been said, in any other (bad) year, "The Bone Clocks" would have been a shoo-in. But 2014 was an unusually good year for the novel in English (and a boring, very bad one for movies; there is a connection there somewhere). Booker or no Booker, "The Bone Clocks" remains an outstanding achievement that this rare phenomenon, a novelist with a global cult following, should be proud of. An absolute "must-have" title for David Mitchell collectors. This is a sealed copy of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few copies of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition, is still in the publisher's airtight shrinkwrap, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: We are unable to provide additional scans, as we normally do, because this is our only copy. It is offered at the original list price in British pounds (or its currency equivalent). A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant novelists of our time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DAVID MITCHELL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1473604885. Signed by Author.
