Description :

PUBLISHER: Winnipeg: 0lafur S. Thorgeirsson and Breidablik Publishing Company, 1906 to 1914. DESCRIPTION/CONTENTS/SUBJECTS: In this incomplete/partial run, we have 14 of 95 issues, being Year I complete in 12 issues plus Year II, issues 2 and 5. Condition VG or better except for covers missing on four issues. Each issue includes about 16 pages. 25 cm. Rare and important early Icelandic-Canadian church and literary/cultural periodical. This is a monthly Icelandic-Canadian Lutheran theology periodical, but also a cultural and literary magazine (see Kristjanson, The Icelandic People in Manitoba, p. 501 for description). It was edited by a noted Icelandic-Canadian Lutheran clergyman and writer whose abilities as an essayist "blossomed" in its pages (see Einarsson, History of Icelandic Prose Writers, p. 236). The most important Icelandic-Canadian writers are published in this journal - i.e. the poet Stephan G. Stephansson contributed often (see Oct/06 issue and many other issues). The second most important Icelandic-Canadian poet, Guttormur Guttormsson also contributed (e.g., see Sept/06 and Oct/06 and many other issues), as did other leading North American Icelandic writersm including Thorstein Thorsteinsson; Einar Hjorleifsson Kvaran; Einar Benediktsson; J. Magnus Bjarnason. As well, there are often are biographical sketches of North American Icelanders and local histories of Icelandic communities (e.g., in August, 1907 there is a short article on the history of Gimli, Manitoba). Translations into Icelandic of world literature are also included, as are many illustrations from photos (usually portraits of Icelandic-Canadian writers, clergymen and prominent women church figures).
