London: Diprose & Bateman, n.d. [February 1885]. Original glazed decorated boards. According to Blanck, this UK gathering of Twain "choice bits" consists entirely of reprinted material, with the exception of "A Shocking Story! -- A Tale of an Elect-Trick" (a white landowner wires a galvanic battery to his often-infiltrated corn crib) -- but even this "is of doubtful authorship." Diprose & Bateman, though little-known today, specialized in publishing cheap, disposable entertainment for railway journeys; it is noteworthy for being co-founded (in 1856) and co-owned by a female -- (John Diprose (1814-1879) and Mary Ann Bateman (1816-1904)), persisting until the time of her death in the early 20th Century -- by then with her daughter as partner. This is a very good copy (wear at the extremities and the inner hinges, with about one-sixth of the blank rear endpaper torn away); it is a fragile book, meant for disposal after one-time reading.
