Titre : California letter sheet depicting two scenes...
Éditeur : Noisy Carier's Book & Stationary Co. / Britton and Rey lithographers, [San Francisco]
Date d'édition : 1856
Folio sheet, folded in half making 4 pages (11" x 8.25"). Of the two outer pages, the front depicts San Francisco scenes as described below; the back page contains the text of the Constitution of the Vigilance Committee and is dated May 15th, 1856; the two inner pages are blank. The San Francisco scenes, two of them, are "Fort Vigilant", the headquarters of the Vigilance Committee, and a "Mass Meeting: Endorsing the Acts of the Vigilance Committee / June 14th." The scene of Fort Vigilant clearly shows the gunny sacks or sandbags that had been put in front of it, inspiring the name "Fort Gunnysack". The purpose of the sandbags was to prevent any attempt by the Governor of the state to raid the place: Gov. Johnson had ordered Maj.-Gen. William T. Sherman of the California Militia to call up his troops to help restore order in San Francisco. The mass meeting occurred shortly after the hanging of Cora and Casey. The blank inner pages were intended for the purchaser to write his letter in that space. The letter sheets are quite rare and also fragile. Very good condition. N° de réf. du libraire 6654
