I Caravaggeschi. Percorsi e protagonisti. Descrizione libro: Skira Milano A. Zuccari Claudio Strinati Caravaggeschi Percorsi protagonisti, 2010. Condizione libro: new. A cura di Alessandro Zuccari. Introduction in English. Milano, 2010; 2 voll., ril. in tela in cofanetto, pp. 1008, ill. b/n col., cm 24,5x28,5. (Arte Antica). This authoritative volume is the most complete publication to date to fully cover the first phase of the Caravaggesque movement. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) is probably the most admired, studied and universally known painter of seventeenth-century Italy. Everyone knows the legend of this cursed and hot-tempered painter, who was rejected by the Roman Curia for his paintings, which were considered to be inappropriate and even scandalous. However, a more complete picture of this artist-as the skilful director of a career fostered and protected by influential cardinals and important noble families-has been known for some time now, in all its complexity. Although many questions still remain regarding Caravaggio's body of work, it is certain that he never formed a proper school or studio. Caravaggio did however have a substantial circle of followers throughout Europe, an unofficial school formed by those who knew him personally and were in direct contact with his works, and also by those who discovered his work following his death. This scholarly opus examines the work of the artists considered direct followers of Caravaggio by Giulio Mancini in his 17th century text "Considerations on Painting". These artists include Bartolomeo Manfredi, lo Spagnoletto, lo Spadarino, Cecco del Caravaggio, and Carlo Saraceni. The book takes into account the many other painters who closely supported the Caravaggesue Movement in the first two decades of the 17th century: Giovanni Baglione, Orazio Borgianni, Antiveduto della Grammatica, Tommaso Salini, Giovanni Serodine and many others. It also thoroughly explores artists who assimilated certain aspects of the style, such as Orazio Gentileschi, Battistello Caracciolo and Orazio Riminaldi, and numerous foreign Caravaggesque artists from France through to Flanders and Spain. The publication spotlights those painters who had direct contact with Caravaggio or his paintings before 1630. What is different about this work is the way in which it interprets this extraordinary period in Italian and European art: in the first part of the publication fourteen "regional" essays analyse the Caravaggesque language throughout Italy and Europe. Further topics in this publication include the distinguishing stylistic and iconographic features derived from Caravaggio. An introductory chapter deals with Roman Caravaggism, the most complex and multi-faceted, which was the driving force of the entire phenomenon. A brief essay is dedicated to each of the fifty Caravaggist painters selected for the study, covering their output and critical assessment of the work. Many of the paintings examined are shown in colour and include important technical details and an updated bibliographical note. The concise yet in-depth style of the essays has resulted in a publication which is directed as much to the specialist as the art lover and which offers an innovative and user friendly tool for exploring the complex world of Caravaggesque painting.
