Synopsis : A comprehensive illustrated history of the carillon in the United States and Canada. Chapter 1 traces the instrument's evolution through almost 400 years of European history. Chapter 2 covers the first 50 years of its presence in the New World (1883-1933) followed by developments in the years 1934-1975 in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 deals with the evolution of the carillon keyboard, while Chapter 5 deals with contemporary carillonneurs and composers. Appendices provide comprehensive data on all of the carillons on the continent, including information on bellfounders and bellfounding techniques, donors and other significant people, number of bells, and type of keyboards.
