Description :

Undated. The composer, the Rev. Frederick Gooch, (1804-1897) was by 1835 Rector of Baginton, Warwickshire and in 1838 appointed as Rural Dean to the Archdeaconry of Coventry. He was the youngest son of the Archdeacon of Sudbury, Venerable John Gooch who was the youngest son of Sir Thomas Gooch, 3rd Baronet of Benacre Hall, Suffolk. His wife, Mathilda Katherine died in 1861 as a result of her clothes having caught fire. He was the composer of the hymn tune Baginton c. 1858 which is included in the 1908 Oxford Hymn Book for the hymn "Great Shepherd of The People, Hear". This collection is bound in blue paper. It comprises of 26 chants, 7 of which have major and minor settings , no. 7 is headed "Funeral", No. 14 "Melody taken from "What tho' I trace" - Handel" and No.19 "from Beethoven", and 4 single chants, 1 of which has major and monir settings. Each chant comprises 4 choir lines, the bass line of which is figured and a two-line organ part. The plain blue paper covers are worn at edges with creases and significant tear on the front, pages are clean. This volume came from the collection of Sir Thomas Gladstone of Fasque. Also included are two short handwritten scores. The first is headed " Chant for 13th ?EoS. T.G. (Thomas Gladstone's hand and initials) August 1851. This is fourteen bars in treble and bass clef. The Second is headed "Mount Ephraim, D. G. 31st Psalm, 4?, 15 bars, two score lines in treble and bas clef. No dust jacket, as published. From the collection of Sir Thomas Gladstone of Fasque (brother of William Gladstone, British Prime Minister). Dated by reference to British Library catalogue. Quantity Available: 1.
