Synopsis of Book
Between 1600 and 1690, sixty-seven Catholic synods were held in Ireland. This book examines the decrees of these synods, tracing the factors which influenced synodal policy. Considerable attention is devoted to the influence of the papacy, Protestantism and the state upon the synodal participants and upon the legislation which they produced. The influence of specifically Irish features, including socio-religious customs, persecution and clerical resources upon legislation is also examined. The final chapters of the book are concerned with the practical application of synodal policies and to the correspondence of synodal views with the thought and practices of ministering clergy. Through examining both 'high' and 'popular' religion within the context of synodal legislation, it is shown that prior to 1640 Catholic reform made progress in the realms of parochial organisation, sacramental worshiip, clerical status and, to some extent, doctrinal organisation. The crisis of the mid-century seriously hindered reform progress so that the Catholic church was forced to begin almost from scratch in the Restoration era. This leads to the conclusion that, by 1690, the process of religious and ecclesiastical reform was no more advanced than it had been in 1640.
