Description du livre 1st Ed., 288pp., 5 maps. Gollancz. 1930. Much underrated "what if" novel of the Western Front & other theatres: the publisher's jacket blurb promises "Here we take leave to say, is a perfectly gorgeous 'stunt' . a novel of The War as it might have been!" Falls (awarding a star) noted: "It is worked out in a very lively, amusing, & skilful fashion. Although many of the events are wildly improbable & could hardly stand detailed criticism, there is considerable military knowledge as well as imagination in the plot." Sleeve notes from dw (not present with this copy) related that the author was born in 1897, joined the army in 1914 at the age of 17 & served with the 21st Divisional Artillery throughout the war on the Western Front 1915-18 including Loos, the Somme, Arras & Ypres 1917, Kemmel, the Marne & Final Advance in 1918, & was Mentioned in Despatches.
