A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

Hundreds of thousands of children are in military service of one sort or another throughout the world, and many are used for front-line fighting in internal and regional conflicts..

"It is immoral that adults should want children to fight their wars for them... There is simply no excuse, no acceptable argument for arming children....."
Archbishop Desmond Tutu

This report documents child recruitment policies and practices in 196 countries and territories. It reviews trends and developments related to the use of child soldiers since the publication of the Coalition’s last global report in 2001, and highlights failures – by the international community, governments and armed groups – to protect children’s fundamental human rights.

The report contains regional overviews for each continent. For each country there are details on all or some of the following: basic statistics; national recruitment legislation and practice; roles of under-18’s in armed conflicts; treaty ratification; notes on recent changes relating to international standards, forces and conscription; details of armed groups operating in the country; roles of girls and boys in forces; information sources including websites.

There is also: a summary of selected international treaties; text of the Optional Protocol; statistical tables; notes on methodology, terms and definitions; a glossary of frequently used abbreviations.

Page de garde:

The Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers was formed in May 1998 by leading non-governmental organisations to end the recruitment and use of child soldiers, both boys and girls, to secure their demobilisation, and to promote their reintegration into their communities. It works to achieve this through advocacy and public education, research and monitoring, and network development and capacity building.

The Coalition's Steering Committee members are: Amnesty International, Defence for Children International, Human Rights Watch, Jesuit Refugee Service, Quaker United Nations Office - Geneva, International Save the Children Alliance, International Federation Terre des Hommes, and World Vision International. The Coalition has regional representatives in Africa, Asia, Americas and Middle East and national networks in about 30 countries. The Coalition unites local, national and international organisations, as well as youth, experts and concerned individuals from every region of the world.
