Full calf binding with gilt tooling and lettering to the spine, marbled endpapers and page edges. Volume 1, Books 1-4 317 pages Volume II, Books V - VIII 302 pages . With 20 steel engraved etchings and 200 woodcuts by John Leech throughout the text. All the plates present ( one loose, chipped). No date given [ 1870 ] Boards disbound, rubbed and spine faded, sporadic stains and brown edges throughout, but many pages are unaffected and remain bright and clean. Original dark green cloth boards,gilt title to spine gilt a little faded, gilt vignette to front board not clear, generally clean and tight rubbing to extremities, fraying to top and bottom of spine with a few tiny losses, all edge gilt, cream endpapers, coloured frontispiece ' The Landing of Julius Caesar, title page has a neat written inscription over the red title, vignette in black and white, pages reasonabl clean, twenty fascinating coloured etchings (all 20 hand coloured plates present) bright and eye-catching, plus 200 woodcuts. preliminaries Preface, Contents of Volume 1 (1--307pages) which comes in Book 1, Book 2, Book 3 and Book 4, each of the 'books' is devided into chapters. then Volume II, (1-304 pages) comes in Book 5, Book 6 Book 7 and Book 8, again all divided into Chapters. This allows the author to start Britain off with the Romans and gradually work through to George II.
