This is the private memoirs of Sam Chamberlain, a man who grew from dragoon private in the U.S. Army during the outbreak of the Mexican War to a respected General by the end of the Civil War. It is a self-titled memoir found and published nearly a century after his death that describes in vivid detail a lad that was half hero/half scoundrel describing battles, love dalliances, chases, escapes, murders, massacres, etc. incl'g glimpses on Zachary Taylor, Robert E Lee and Jefferson Davis as well as Santa Anna, the Galton Gang, and the indian wars of the southwest. 'First edition of this facsimile of an original manuscript memoir by Chamberlain -- rogue, American hero and soldier of fortune who fought in the Mexican-American War, and later served during the Civil War, rising to Brigadier General. Chamberlain (1829-1908) rode in the Texas/Mexico border disputes with the Glanton Gang, and was involved in taking scalps to claim bounties from Mexican authorities. After the Civil War he would become a well known painter'. x, 301pp, 15 plates in colour, 40 illustrations in the text, endpaper maps. Blue cloth boards with red spine, gold decorations and titles shows virtually no wear. Tight, square binding. Price-clipped dustjacket, in brodart, shows wear to most edges, small lost piece to the head of the spine and some light rubbing. Code No 7197A to front flap; 7198A to rear flap.
