A propos de ce titre

Synopsis :

In the early 1960s, when the United States and the Soviet Union faced each other in a nuclear standoff, a small band of engineers, designers, and intelligence officers secretly set out to do the impossible. Armed with little more than a few ideas and drawings of the payload, they created America's first reconnaissance satellite program - the Corona project - which for decades remained one of the nation's most closely guarded secrets. This is the story of their extraordinary efforts, from the first desperate requests for intelligence on the USSR, throuqh a series of heartbreaking failures, to Corona's ultimate success. This book focuses not only on the Corona project's great technical achievements but also on the remarkable human side of the story - on the engineers who built the satellites but could not divulge what they did even to their own families, and on the recovery pilots who competed to see who would be the first ace. Their stories appear for the first time in this book along with previously classified details of their recovery unit and a list of the ace pilots.

Description de la librairie

Located in the heart of historic downtown Springfield, Prairie Archives has been serving Central Illinois since 1973. We have occupied three locations since our founding and our current store has been located at 522 E. Adams since 1992. We have approximately 250,000 books in stock, documents, manuscript material, posters, prints, comics, collectibles, magazines, political buttons, postcards and lots more! If you don't see a title you're looking for, please feel free to inquire; only a small part of our stock is catalogued. Our store hours are 10-5 Central time Monday through Saturday. We also carry a line of t-shirts, including the ever-popular "Abraham Lincoln: They'd have to shoot me to get me back to Springfield" and "Frank Lloyd Wright: I can design a building that would look good even in Springfield". Please inquire about our other designs, sizes and prices. And of course, we can't leave without mentioning Hannah, our golden retriever. She has run things here since she was a puppy [October, 1994]; she brings more business to the shop than anyone else. Always friendly, cheerful, and affectionate (especially when someone has food!) She has recently been joined by Ruby, a young and energetic black lab. Hannah and Ruby say "Come See Us!"
